In the #HipCounsel Spotlight – Emily Cooper, Owner of Cooper Law, LLC In Interview With High Performance Counsel
Client Perspective Series
Who are you and what is your role? How did you end up in (or a customer of) the legal business?
I am Emily Cooper, the owner and manager of Cooper Law, LLC in a family law and social security disability law practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Getting into the law was a fluke. I didn’t think I could handle blood so being a doctor was out of the question. Friends suggested law as an alternative and off to law school I went.
Tell us a bit about the organization you’re part of – paint a picture for our audience.
Cooper Law, LLC is unique. Prior to Cooper Law I worked in private practice and for a legal aid organization. I realized a lot of people are turned away from legal aid because they make a bit too much money but standard hourly rates for attorneys are sometimes so high, they are not affordable. At Cooper Law, we offer sliding scale fees based on income which allows people to get great legal representation at rates that are tailored to their circumstances.
What does your typical day look like?
Our days are different constantly but there is a constant theme of working to help people in need. On any given day, our attorney may be in court at a hearing, preparing for court, meeting with clients or drafting documents. We are a busy practice and there is always something to do.
In your words, describe your experience of using Smith.ai – from your perspective. How does it help you and your organization?
As the law practice has grown and become busier, it became apparent that having staff answer the phones was not practical. We are a high-volume firm with many calls every day from new potential clients to current clients needing assistance. Moving to Smith.ai for answering all our calls has allowed us to focus the staff to be sure quality work is being done and we are on top of deadlines and the schedule. Smith.ai has polite “receptionists” who can help with scheduling, do initial intakes and at times call people back for us when we need messages relayed. We’re hoping to also start adding online chat with Smith.ai helping to manage those communications as well.
What advice would you offer others facing similar circumstances?
Don’t wait! If answering the phones is making it so that you are stressed or not getting anything done, get help right away.
FANCY RESTAURANT OR GASTRO FOOD TRUCK – WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO FAVORITE FOOD?
Italian is always a best bet.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? JUST ONE. AND WHY?
Shawshank Redemption – this should not need any explanation because it is so good.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY WHEN YOU’RE NOT BUSY IMPROVING THE LEGAL INDUSTRY?
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT ONE BOOK WOULD YOU WANT?
Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
A FERRARI, A PRIUS OR A BICYCLE – WHICH WOULD YOU PICK?
Depends on the season. I live in Minnesota – in the summer I’d go with the bicycle but in the winter, I have to add one and say a Jeep. There is nothing worse than getting stuck in the snow when it is 30 below zero!
